A quote engine can show you the rates companies publish. Choosing where to apply requires understanding which insurer may view your individual underwriting profile most favorably.
Decision Tree is an independent insurance broker. We can compare policies, underwriting approaches and pricing among multiple insurers instead of being limited to the products of one company.
A company may advertise an excellent rate for a preferred underwriting class but evaluate your particular health history, family history, occupation or lifestyle less favorably than another insurer would.
Different insurance companies can view the same applicant differently. We help identify insurers whose underwriting guidelines may better fit your circumstances before deciding where to apply.
When appropriate, we may apply to more than one insurance company so competing underwriters can evaluate the case. That can allow us to compare actual offers rather than relying only on the rates displayed before underwriting.
Finding an attractive price does not submit an application. A licensed Decision Tree Insurance agent first reviews your information and helps determine which insurance company—or companies—make the most sense for your underwriting circumstances.
Use the quote tool to compare published rates, coverage amounts and term lengths from multiple insurance companies. Nothing is submitted simply because you find a price you like.
Your agent confirms the information behind the quote and discusses health, family history, lifestyle, occupation, hobbies and other factors that could affect which insurer may be the best fit.
Once you and your agent decide which company—or companies—to pursue, your licensed agent helps complete and submit the application. In some situations, we may apply to more than one insurer.
The insurance company reviews the application and determines the actual underwriting class and terms it is willing to offer. Requirements can vary by insurer and applicant.
After underwriting, the insurer may approve and issue the policy as applied for, make a different offer based on its underwriting findings, postpone a decision, or decline coverage. A different offer—sometimes called a counteroffer—may mean a different underwriting class, premium, coverage amount, or policy terms. If more than one insurer considered the application, we can compare the resulting offers with you before you decide which policy to accept.
Life insurance can look like a commodity when you compare prices on a screen. But the lowest published premium does not tell you how the insurer will ultimately underwrite you—or whether another policy provides features that matter to you.
The goal is to find the combination of underwriting outcome, premium, coverage features and insurer strength that best fits the reason you are buying the policy.
Most online shoppers begin with term insurance because it provides a large death benefit for a defined period at a relatively low initial premium. Some financial needs, however, can last much longer.

The prices shown in the quote tool are published rates from the insurance companies for the policy selections and underwriting class entered. They are not invented teaser prices.
What the quote tool cannot determine is whether the insurance company will ultimately approve you for that underwriting class. If the insurer approves you at the class shown, the applicable published rate for that class and policy applies. If the insurer approves you at a different underwriting class, the premium will be based on the class it actually offers.

No. Comparing quotes simply lets you see published pricing and available options. You can change the coverage amount, compare different terms, use the tool again, or leave without submitting an application.
No. The quote tool allows you to compare published rates, but selecting a quote does not submit an application or put coverage in force.
If you want to move forward, a licensed Decision Tree Insurance agent will first confirm your information and review factors that may affect underwriting. The agent can then help determine which insurance company—or companies—make the most sense before an application is submitted.
Underwriting is the process an insurance company uses to decide whether it will insure you and which underwriting class—and therefore which premium—it is willing to offer.
Depending on the insurer, underwriting may consider your current health, medical history, medications, height and weight, tobacco or nicotine use, family medical history, driving history, occupation or career, travel, lifestyle, hobbies and activities that may involve additional risk.
Not every insurance company evaluates these factors the same way. One insurer may be more favorable toward a particular medical condition, family history, occupation, hobby or other risk than another. A licensed independent agent can help identify companies whose underwriting guidelines may fit your individual circumstances before deciding where to apply.
Not necessarily. Some applicants may qualify through accelerated underwriting without a traditional insurance examination. Depending on the insurer, underwriting may instead rely on the application, electronic records and other information available to the company.
Other applicants may be asked to complete an examination, laboratory testing, medical-record review or additional questions. Requirements vary by insurer, policy, applicant and amount of coverage.
No medical exam does not mean no underwriting. The insurance company still decides whether to offer coverage and which underwriting class applies.
Often, yes. Having a medical condition does not automatically prevent you from obtaining life insurance. The important question is how a particular insurance company evaluates that condition.
Insurers can reach different conclusions based on the diagnosis, severity, treatment, stability, medications, follow-up care and other factors. This is why selecting a health class in a quote engine should not be treated as an underwriting decision.
A licensed independent agent can help identify insurers that may view your particular medical history more favorably before deciding where to apply.
Yes. Insurance companies offer coverage to many tobacco and nicotine users, although premiums are generally higher than comparable non-tobacco rates.
Carrier definitions and underwriting rules can differ, including how particular forms of nicotine or tobacco use are classified. An independent agent can help compare insurers when those differences affect the available rate class.
Different insurance companies can evaluate the same applicant differently. When health history, family history, occupation, hobbies or another underwriting factor may produce different results among insurers, it can sometimes make sense to have more than one company consider the application.
This allows us to compare actual underwriting decisions rather than assuming the company showing the lowest initial price will necessarily make the best final offer.
Applying to multiple companies is not necessary or appropriate for every applicant. Your licensed agent can help decide whether it makes sense for your circumstances.
Choosing a quote does not submit an application. First, a licensed Decision Tree Insurance agent confirms the information behind the quote and discusses underwriting factors that may affect which insurer is most appropriate.
You and your agent then decide which company—or companies—to apply to. After the application is submitted, the insurer completes underwriting.
The insurance company may approve and issue the policy as applied for, offer coverage at a different underwriting class or on different terms, postpone its decision, or decline coverage. If more than one insurer makes an offer, we can help you compare the results before you decide which policy to accept.
Not necessarily. Before underwriting, the company displaying the lowest published rate may not be the company most likely to approve you for that rate class.
After underwriting, price is still not the only consideration. Compare the insurer's financial strength, policy provisions, conversion privileges, available riders or living benefits, term duration and other contract features that matter to you.
Start with the financial problem the policy is intended to solve. That may include replacing future income, paying debts or a mortgage, funding education, covering final expenses, protecting a business, creating a legacy, or meeting another identifiable financial need.
Existing insurance, savings and other resources available to survivors can reduce the amount that needs to be purchased.

No. Rider availability, definitions, qualifying events, benefit amounts, charges and the effect on the remaining death benefit can vary substantially by insurance company and policy.
Depending on the contract, available provisions may include accelerated death benefits for terminal illness, chronic illness benefits, long-term-care benefits, waiver-of-premium provisions, child riders and other optional benefits.
Some provisions may be included with a policy while others may involve an additional charge. Two policies with the same death benefit and similar premiums therefore may not provide the same benefits.
Permanent insurance may be appropriate when the financial need is expected to last for life or when guarantees, cash value, liquidity or other permanent-policy features are important.
Whole life and the different forms of universal life can involve very different guarantees, funding expectations and risks.
You can use our permanent life insurance policy-fit tool to compare those approaches before deciding what type of policy you want to pursue.
